Wildfire season is in full swing, and with the threat of flames touching down in local areas, electric companies are issuing mandatory blackouts as means of stopping/preventing these fires from spreading. So, what do you, the consumer do when the power goes out? Or much worse, what do you do when you’re asked to evacuate?

The threat of having to leave homes and businesses has become more common in recent weeks as the perfect storm of high winds and fire conditions continue to pop up. Though times like this can be stressful, we have compiled a list of helpful tips that will allow you to create a backup plan to make it through the storm…or fire…or any natural disaster that heads our way.

  1. Develop an emergency plan: By developing an emergency plan, you are able to take control of an unfortunate situation by having the resources needed to get through it in a coordinated attempt. Have a plan and be able to execute it. Test it on occasion and practice drills so you and your employees are able to implement it with ease. Such plan could include anything from doing an online backup with hourly snapshots every day, making sure everyone is aware of how to remove a sensitive data on the fly, to coordinating with a landlord about having an emergency area designated to store your valuables, etc. These are just a couple suggestion that could save you in a crunch.
  2. Battery Backup – At any given time, power loss can strike, creating a world of headache if there is no power backup available. By having a battery backup/UPS, your devices are already connected to a temporary source of power which will automatically turn on when power goes out. A silver lining in this case is that most battery backups keep power going up to an hour or more; allowing you to turn off your computer properly or giving you access to it as well.
  3. Cloud storage/Online backup – Having a backup of important documents and sensitive data is crucial in this day and age of immediate access, so having this safety and security while the unexpected occurs is a lifeline. With cloud storage, you are able to access all of your data anytime and anywhere as long as it has been uploaded to the cloud.
  4. Office 365 – In the case that you are physically unable to get to your business, Office 365 can be used as a remote desktop of sorts as it contains all of the Microsoft suite that you depend on in the desktop version, but accessible anywhere…along with all work saved in the Office 365 portal known as OneDrive. Extreme conditions or not, Office 365 is a crucial and multi-purpose tool most businesses are crossing over to.

Though having an emergency plan and backups for your business seems like a daunting task, it ultimately is a blessing in disguise. Alongside, natural disasters and harsh weather conditions, these practices can also be used as security measures.
