Security for Macs

mac security privacy tips

Nowadays, more and more businesses are using Mac computers and laptops in their businesses.  More applications are written for iOS, Apple’s operating system.  The fact that more applications are now Cloud based makes it easier to use any devices to access the programs and data.  But many of the Apple users are under this illusion that Macs are immune from any kind of security threats and Microsoft is the evil company and all the hackers are going after PC’s not Macs.

The truth is that any device that access’s the internet or is shared in any local networks is vulnerable to get hacked or infected by malware or viruses.  Hackers are after security weak links irrespective of the operating system.

Although, Apple has done a great job of guarding against security threats but, In 2019, a malware called OSX/Crescent Core was reportedly found on several websites and worked by installing an infected file or a Safari extension.

Here are few security tips for Mac Users:

  1. Apply all the updates immediately.  Although this is a pain but that is the only way to safeguard against threats and performance issues.  Have the latest iOS on your Mac.
  2. Install a reputable Antivirus and keep updated with the latest definitions.  Most of them such Norton and McAfee have Mac version of Antivirus and Malware.
  3. Never open email attachments from unknown senders.  Especially the ones with DMG extension.  These include attachments in emails from large companies and financial institutions. When in doubt, contact the sender to verify.
  4. The same goes for links.  Always hover you mouse and see the true URL and look for misspelling and bad grammar.
  5. Be careful with downloaded apps.  Verify the download is what you had intended and not another app.  This is a very common issue that you search something and the download disguises itself as the original app while it is a malware.  Do not fall for plugins and extensions to make a program work for you.
  6. Create a standard account not an admin account for everyday activity.
  7. Have a complex password and change it regularly.
  8. Do not leave your computer unattended.  You can set up screen savers and choose Hot corners that requires passwords.
  9. Audit your security and Privacy settings.  How comfortable are you with sharing your physical location with different apps? Do you even know which apps are receiving details of where you are? A quick visit into System Preferences can reveal all. To update these settings, you need to click on Security & Privacy and choose the Privacy tab. Once there, you can choose Location Services and view whether they are enabled and, if so, which apps can access your location. To make changes to these settings, you may need to unlock the padlock by entering an administrator password.
