- Never open email attachments from unknown senders. Especially the ones with DMG extension. These include attachments in emails from large companies and financial institutions. When in doubt, contact the sender to verify.
- The same goes for links. Always hover you mouse and see the true URL and look for misspelling and bad grammar.
- Be careful with downloaded apps. Verify the download is what you had intended and not another app. This is a very common issue that you search something and the download disguises itself as the original app while it is a malware. Do not fall for plugins and extensions to make a program work for you.
- Create a standard account not an admin account for everyday activity.
- Have a complex password and change it regularly.
- Do not leave your computer unattended. You can set up screen savers and choose Hot corners that requires passwords.
- Audit your security and Privacy settings. How comfortable are you with sharing your physical location with different apps? Do you even know which apps are receiving details of where you are? A quick visit into System Preferences can reveal all. To update these settings, you need to click on Security & Privacy and choose the Privacy tab. Once there, you can choose Location Services and view whether they are enabled and, if so, which apps can access your location. To make changes to these settings, you may need to unlock the padlock by entering an administrator password.
