Special Series “IT Pain Points” – Part Four: Cybersecurity & Keeping Your Data Safe

Part Four: Cybersecurity & Keeping Your Data Safe – As we see or hear in the news daily, a new company (large or small) has fallen victim to cybercrime.  It feels impossible to win the battle against cybercrime, as the pandemic has made it worse.  The good news is, we can all do our part to keep our business data and private information safe from cybercriminals.

The first step is taking it seriously. It is an existential threat, and no business is immune from it (regardless of how big or small the company is).  It should be a top to bottom and bottom-to-top approach. It has to become clear that it is everyone’s responsibility to do their part to protect your business against cybercrime.

Second, establish a well-defined policy and procedure with the help of security experts.  The policy should cover all aspects of the following steps: Having complex passwords changed every 90 days. Implementing spam filters and 2-factor authentication, not clicking on suspicious attachments and links. More complex but necessary steps also include: Setting up online backup and disaster recovery, installing permitter cameras, Server room, physical locations hardening, and choosing the proper firewall, antivirus, antispam, and other threat protection applications.  But most importantly, regular employee awareness training ensures employees are continuously educated and reminded of the steps to eliminate and mitigate the dangers of becoming victims of cybercrime.

Though all these processes may sound daunting, many security policy templates are available via your trade organizations, insurance companies, IRS, and online for a nominal cost or fee.  Any plan should be implemented in conjunction with the help of a security expert.   If you are a small business, regular monitoring of your devices is the only way and not as expensive as you thought it would be.

Lastly, it is not a bad idea to talk to your insurance company and determine the cost of adding cybersecurity insurance to your policy.
