Windows 10 End of Life Support: Follow-Up & Urgent Reminder
This is a follow-up to our earlier article on Windows 10’s retirement from back in July 2025. Since then, the deadline has only gotten closer—and the risks of waiting are now even more pressing.
Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, there will be no more security updates, patches, or technical support—unless you purchase Extended Security Updates (ESU).
Here’s the situation today: over 60% of Windows users are still running Windows 10, and many businesses still haven’t taken any steps toward Windows 11. If you’re in that group, time is no longer on your side.
Outdated systems become vulnerable fast. Unsupported software becomes a liability. And delaying until the deadline almost always results in emergency spending, rushed migrations, and unnecessary risk.
The good news? You still have two main paths forward.
Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11
Pros
- Supported through at least 2031
- Stronger built-in security (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, UEFI)
- Better performance with modern CPUs and SSDs
- Less maintenance in the long run
- Future-ready with AI tools and modern features
- Growing third-party compatibility
Cons
- Upfront investment in new hardware and services
- Planning and migration effort required
- Potential legacy software issues
Option 2: Pay for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU)
Pros
- Short-term cost savings
- Minimal disruption to operations
- Extra time to budget, test, or plan migration
Cons
- Costs ~$61 per device for year one → ~$244 per device for 3 years
- Requires installation, which is an additional cost
- No performance or feature improvements
- Coverage ends by 2028—upgrade is still unavoidable
- May leave compliance gaps in regulated industries
Side-by-Side: Upgrade vs. ESU
Upgrading now means long-term stability and fewer surprises. ESU, while useful for buying time, is only a stopgap.
Our Updated Recommendation
We strongly advise upgrading to Windows 11 where possible. It’s the smarter long-term investment because:
- It’s supported through at least 2031
- It offers stronger protection for modern threats
- It reduces total costs compared to escalating ESU fees
- It ensures compatibility with future software and vendor support
- It avoids the chaos of a last-minute migration in 2025
For systems that absolutely can’t be upgraded right away, ESU can bridge the gap—but don’t rely on it as your main strategy.
October 2025 is approaching quickly. Treat this as a now-or-never planning window.
